The industrial trends towards flexible assembly and low-volume, high-variety product manufacturing complicates the job of assembly operators. As such, there is an increasing need to interactively support operators with intelligible instructions (including safety information) that are tailored to their experience level and other contextual factors like client device characteristics (e.g., AR glasses).
Also, situations are arising where on-site operators would benefit from having access to training videos, 3D models and even immersive source material like light field representations. In the interest of flexibility, all this information is best network streamed on an as-needed basis instead of it being pre-installed on the client device.
Next to this, operators may want to get remote assistance when assembling rare and complex products or during maintenance activities. Finally, in order to optimally match pending tasks with a company’s operator workforce, real-time tracking of the capabilities and experience levels of individual operators is needed, which in turn necessitates the exchange of substantial volumes of sensor data.
ConnectedOperator_ICON aims to develop a networked, distributed architecture to tackle these stringent needs of manufacturing companies in a scalable and integrated fashion.
ConnectedOperator_ICON is an Industrial Research ICON project. We are looking for companies to join the User Group and work with us on the valorisation of the project.
